Affordable Housing
The affordable housing crisis in Worcester is getting worse, according to recent data from Worcester housing advocates and city officials.
The Central MA Housing Alliance reports that the number of individuals experiencing homelessness has risen each of the past 3 years. With a 2.9% rental vacancy rate and an average monthly rent of $1,775, Worcester lacks affordable housing options. According to Forbes Advisor, Worcester is the 3rd most competitive rental market in the U.S. Over half of renters in Worcester are considered cost-burdened, and 2,800 eviction cases were filed in Worcester County in the past year.
WCHR programs and services are designed to provide long-term affordable housing options to the most vulnerable residents who experience chronic homelessness or are at risk of homelessness. WCHR also provides resident support designed to end the cycle of homelessness for people on the margin. This approach is supported by research demonstrating that supportive resident services build long-lasting stability.
